About Gul-e Rana
I am a registered Social Worker/Psychotherapist and the founder of Rooh Therapy. As a child of South Asian and Muslim immigrant parents, I spent most of my life moving from place to place in hopes of finding a “better future”. Throughout my journey, I have been exposed to various cultures which brought upon a great deal of confusion and curiosity in me about my own identity, belonging and values as I navigated my life as a 1.5 generation immigrant in Canada.
Growing up as a child of immigrants meant that my parents had an expectation of me becoming a Doctor. For most of my life, I had internalized this narrative of equating my success with being a Doctor. Therefore, I pursued my Bachelors of Science from the University of Toronto with the intentions of applying to medical school. However, as I started doing community work with The Mental Health and Wellness Café (MHWC), a non-profit organization I founded, I realized the value of practices integral to social work such as therapy and counselling. My community work pushed me to challenge the idea of medication as the primary or sole intervention.
I find passion in having conversations on taboo mental health topics especially in South Asian community. I hope to be as real as possible about my journey as the eldest child and daughter in an immigrant household, my failures, my lessons, my heartbreaks, my betrayals and more. Because just like you, I am human first before I am a therapist. I too have experienced and overcome many of the challenges that you may be facing. I believe there are more similarities than differences in the struggles we face. And sometimes all we need is that one person to help us discover our internal strengths and resilience.
I understand how daunting it can be to reach out for help and tackle the cultural or faith-based stigmas surrounding therapy. I also recognize that you are the expert in your own life, so I aim to make this process collaborative. Together, we will create a personalized support plan and strategies for you to achieve your goals. I invite you to reach out to me for a free 15-minute consultation where we can explore if I would be the right fit as your therapist!
